Different types of plastic offer different levels of surface energy. Plastics that have a high surface energy, such as PET and PVC, are easier for label adhesives to achieve and maintain a sufficient bond. Because the adhesive is able to penetrate the entire surface, increasing the available bonding area.
However, other plastics, such as HDPE and PP, offer low surface energy. This causes the adhesive to bead up on top of the surface, reducing the bonding area and making it more difficult to achieve successful adhesion. This can lead to a weak bond or label peeling.
